Academic Excellence
All grades have the University of Chicago Math
series textbooks as references but have been basing curriculum on Michigan
grade level benchmarks and MEAP math scores. This is done by supplementing
the series with materials gathered by staff from the annual workshops and
conferences that they attend. The series has helped to raise student performance
on problem solving skills and higher level thinking skills. The fifth grade
studies number theory, estimation, multiplication, geometry, division and
fractions. They end the year with an exciting million-dollar project. Sixth
grade students experience the highs and lows of the stock market in a project
that gives them a feel for decimals and percents. In seventh grade, students
learn algebra, geometry, and graphing and complete numerous projects. The
eighth grade emphasis is on algebra preparation. Students may earn high
school credit by taking algebra in 8th grade, enabling them to take additional
math at the high school.
